Why most dialogue sounds fake

Author's Notes

Hello writers,

One of the fastest ways to spot an inexperienced writer is dialogue that feels stiff or artificial.

Real people rarely speak in perfectly formed sentences.

They interrupt.
They dodge questions.
They talk around what they really mean.

Good dialogue captures that rhythm.

Sharpen Your Skill

Instead of explaining emotion, let characters reveal themselves through how they speak.

For example:

Flat dialogue

"I'm upset that you didn't tell me the truth."

Natural dialogue

"You knew. And you didn't think that was something I should hear from you?"

Same conflict.
Much stronger tension.

Writer’s Practice Corner

Write a conversation between two characters where one is hiding something.

Rules:

• no narration
• no dialogue tags
• only conversation

Let the tension reveal itself.

Word target: 500 words.
